Meet Hazel Hazel lived in the south west of England. Born in Northampton in 1968, she was educated in Leeds and in Devon. She became a qualified teacher in 1993, going on to teach in Kent, Lancashire and Wiltshire, affecting and influencing the lives of many young people as she did. She worked hard at this, and was well respected and well liked.
In 2000, Hazel suffered an epileptic fit, which lead directly to the discovery of a tumour in her brain. For several years, only the regular, but infrequent, scans and appointments affected her daily life. However, a time came when the tumour grew to a point where it started to affect her function, and she was forced to give up work.
Surgery and radiotherapy followed, and she lost most of her sight and her short term memory. Unfortunately, the nature of the condition meant that she slowly declined in health. She was admitted to a specialist care home in Milton Keynes in August 2007. Forward looking views were extremely uncertain. She had a number of ups and downs and revised expectations, and though she did occasionally rally, her condition never returned to the levels she'd enjoyed when she was illness free. She become gradually more isolated and distant, suffering anxiety and confusion in addiiton to her physical impairments.
Hazel died in November 2008 as a result of the continued progression of the tumour, aged 40. She will be missed and cherished by a great many people who loved her through her good times and through her illness.
